Dark Desert Project With Reebok

Featuring the Furylite and Furylite Chukka silhouettes, we have come together with Reebok Classic to produce the “Dark Desert Project.” Using a dramatic volcanic eruption as inspiration, we reworked the footwear models to reflect the “before” and “after” effects of the catastrophe. Rendered with a striking black and white palette, the classic sneakers are reimagined with the same sleek, minimalist style that is hallmark to our aesthetic. The Furylite is constructed with a luxe white leather upper, accented with segments of cream. In contrast, the boot-like Furylite Chukka showcases a dark obsidian leather body, detailed with a white fragment on the heel counter.

Inside the HQ with Urban Outfitters

Recently our friends over from Urban Outfitters paid a visit to our headquarters out here in Huntington Beach, CA. On the outside, it may appear that we are just another Jogger Pants company but we’re continuously evolving and transitioning ourselves into a more contemporary space. Check out the latest interview with our Brand Director, Alex James, and a look inside our home.

Can you tell us about yourself and your background?
East coast bred—New Jersey to be exact. I grew up in the NYC Hardcore/Punk scene and always had a fixation with clothing from the Seditionaries movement to the grunge wave. I started collecting, and eventually selling, vintage clothing all over NYC. This got my name out there and opened a ton of doors for me. I used my knowledge later on to consult on design and direction for some major men’s brands.
How did Publish come about?
Our amazing founder, Michael Huynh, had a vision. I had a similar vision and saw the trend of sport fashion hitting for the next decade. Michael saw the void in the marketplace for a street-meets-contemporary style brand. We wanted to fill that void with quality goods that pushed the design envelope; Publish was born.

The brand’s been going strong for 5 years now. How has the line evolved since 2010?
The brand has evolved in a beautiful fashion house for Men and Women. Publish has made a swift transition into a more contemporary space and the response has been amazing. In the process, we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the world’s best established and emerging companies.
What sorts of influences inform the look and feel of Publish? Have your influences changed over the years?
We will always have an affinity for a clean aesthetic. Our clothing and imagery always convey that. We are able to see beauty in the simplest concepts; others can’t see that.

What kinds of people, places, and things do you draw inspiration from?
People: James Dean, Jun Takahashi, Morrissey, Kurt Cobain, Ralph Lauren.
Places: Copenhagen, Osaka, The Salton Sea, 1990’s Seattle.
Things: Vintage US military, welding, automotive design, the future of Apple.
How do you strike a balance between pared-down minimalism and progressive design?
We lay somewhere in between Chaos and Balance. We have an amazing design team that understands this very well.

What piece are you most excited about for the current season?
The Sprinter was created out of a need for comfort, mobility, and functionality in a pant. We took all the key points from our joggers of the past and applied those elements into the creation of the Sprinter. The Sprinter is intended for the everyday person to wear from morning until night seamlessly in any occasion.

What about the overall collection for the Fall?
The vibe of the Fall ’15 collection really pulled inspiration from growing up in the ’90s. We grew up in a scene where we listened to hip-hop and punk-rock. Styles crossed over and this collection is totally a representation of culture-mixing. The Sawyer overalls are a perfect example. They are a direct ode to the ’90s.
What’s next for Publish?
We have a slew of amazing collaborations ahead. I can’t disclose them all, but Timberland and Reebok are two that we are beyond excited about. Keep an eye out for our Holiday 2015 collection as well. Accurately titled “ In Between Days’, this collection is fully refined and showcases five years of hard work.

Street Meat

Extra Butter partners with Reebok for the 25th Anniversary of the Ventilator. 1990 marks the birth year of the Reebok Ventilator, as well as the start and rise of “Street Meat” food vending, a delicacy which remains a New York City staple and Extra Butter favorite through the years.

Executed on a buttery, premium, euphoria nubuck upper, Extra Butter’s “Street Meat” Ventilator takes it’s design cues from Halal food plates; mixing appetizing elements and colors that point to lamb, chicken, falafel, lettuce, yellow rice, and of course the infamous red sauce and white sauce. Extra Butter takes the gritty element of NYC food vending and spins it with Reebok for a luxury feel that both highlights the Ventilator, and pays proper homage to the delectable dish that “Street Meat” truly is.

Also featured throughout the video is our ‘Arnelle‘ pull over hooded sweater.
