Meet LA’s Newest Hustle: Leonelle

Pop Recording Artist ready to set the world on fire! NYC Born. OHIO Bred. LA Hustle. We got a chance to sit down with up and coming Leonelle as she pursues her dream of becoming a musician artist. In this recent interview we learn how she got started, what inspires her, and how she stands out above from other pop artists.

When did you realize that you wanted to be a singer?
I knew I wanted to do this ever since I was a little girl. I was always singing and dancing around my house, putting together shows and having my next door neighbors come over to film me. As soon as I could, I started to perform in stage groups, musicals and train as a vocalist and dancer. I was always looking for ways to entertain (ask my older brothers, they thought I was super annoying lol). Growing up I continued to just “know” my destiny was as an artist. That unwavering belief helped me so much to get to where I am now. I never stopped believing.

Why is the intersection of fashion and music so relevant?
Music and fashion are both such powerful ways to express ourselves. We’re all continuing to find ourselves and grow and share what’s real to us. At least I am. Fashion and music speak for that. I can tell my own stories in different ways through my style (For example, I dress in accordance with my mood) as well as my melodies and lyrics.

What inspires you to create?
The best songs come from when I’m really emotional and vulnerable — usually when I’m struggling and in a lot of pain or when I’m in love, so happy. Other music inspires me as well. I can hear an Amy Winehouse or Janet Jackson song and feel the need to create. My producer, C-ray, can play the piano and it may bring me back to a random ass moment that I had with a friend years ago. Then we’ll make a song about it. I just never know. Watching other people perform live inspires me too. Broadway shows inspire me. I’ve always been a performer so I can’t help but get excited!

What differentiates you from other pop artists?
The oh so popular question! I’m me. I just create using what inspires me, what I’ve been through and how I’m feeling. I grew up on Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson and Usher, just to name a few. My music reflects my childhood inspirations as well as my love for late ‘80s pop. I love the melodies and production from both eras so that shows through my music. That era when Janet and Paula were kicking ass and DANCING. I want to get people dancing again (I think it’s starting to come back, so that’s good). I perform in a way that allows you get all of me: the high energy choreographed songs and the stripped down raw acoustic ballads. I’m inspired by performance so as an artist I love to put on a good show.

What messages do you hope to communicate through your music?
I’ve learned so much in the past few years. With each song there’s a different message, whether it’s loving yourself exactly the way you are, knowing that you’re not alone no matter what crazy bullshit someone is putting you through, or simply letting go and feeling good. I’m excited to continue to release music and videos that show people what I’m really about.

How would you describe your recently released single, ‘Push’?
I wanted to come out with a fun dance record for my first single. The original Salt n Pepa ‘Push It’ is such a dope record, so I thought it would be cool to spin it and make it my own. A sexy pop song. Apparently it’s a good work out song (so I’ve heard hahaha)!

In your music video for Push, you emphasize performing. Why do you feel performance is so important as a musician?
Performance is a part of me (as you can probably tell by now)! I’ve always been mesmerized watching people like Britney and Janet perform. I fell in love and started to do it myself – I continue to up until this very day. Seeing the reaction on people’s faces makes it all the worth while. It’s like a drug!

Do you have any upcoming projects in the works?
I’m about to release another song on my Soundcloud shortly! It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written, so I’m pumped. The music video for my single ‘PUSH‘ is airing on MTV Hits (happy face). I’ll be performing for Creative Recreation YouTube series “Sole Sessions” so stay tuned! I’ll be continuing to put out music throughout the summer and I’ll be putting out an EP in the fall. Things are always changing and arising so I’m praying for the best!
